Consumer court lawyers to meet Guv on Jan 28

Due to the delay in setting up of Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission at Brahmapur, a four-member delegation of the Ganjam Consumer Court lawyers’ Association led by its president Kailash Chandra Mishra will meet Governor SC Jameer on January 28 at the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, said Mishra here on Monday.

Even though the State Government had taken a decision in principle to set up Circuit Benches of the State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission one each at Brahmapur and Sambalpur, but no tangible action for setting up the bench at Berhampur has yet been taken, causing serious public discontent in the region.

“Since the Government had assured the agitating lawyers for opening of a Circuit Bench several times in last two years, but in vain, we do not trust the assurances of the Minister till the bench is inaugurated,” said a senior lawyer.

Minister Sanjay Dasburma, during his visit to the district, had hinted that the proposed bench at Brahmapur is likely to be inaugurated between February 3 and 5.  Similarly, Food and Civil Supplied Department Secretary also had given similar assurances on July 26 that, the bench will be opened at Brahmapur soon.

However, the State has proposed to set up Circuit Benches in Brahmapur and Sambalpur considering the large number of cases pending before the State Commission.
