Thousands of members of Ganjam Zilla Nirman Sramik Sangh, a body affiliated to Odisha Construction Workers Federation and CITU, led by Judhisthir Behera, Aswini Das and Madhav Kothia took out a massive rally and staged demonstration shouting slogans against the Government in front of the office of the Additional labour Commissioner (AlC) at Aska Road here on Monday.
They picketed in front of the ACl office and later submitted a memorandum pressing for a 17-point charter of demands. They alleged that the Government was so far apathetic to their grievances. The demands included payment of Rs 15,000 as minimum wage for construction workers, Rs 2,000 as monthly pension, Rs 50,000 assistance for marriage of daughters, provision of residential houses and special cell in every district for grievance redressal.
AlC Nilamadhav Mishal and AlO Sibanarayan Sahu reportedly assured the construction workers to convey the Government about their demands. Among others, youth leader Basant Nanda and trade union leader lakshman Padhi spoke. The vehicular traffic from Aska first gate up to Gate Bazaar was brought to a halt due to the rally for some time.
