Consider lifer’s premature release: HC to State

The Orissa High Court on Wednesday suggested the State to consider premature release of a lifer who has undergone 17 years of imprisonment after he was convicted in a murder case way back in the year 2003.

A Division Bench of Justices SK Mishra and Savitri Ratho allowed the relief to one Bunda Munda of Sundargarh district, who is undergoing life imprisonment for murdering his elder brother Gaham Munda. The court also set aside a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on Bunda by the trial court observing that since the convict is in custody for the past so many years, he need not pay any fine or undergo imprisonment.

Bunda had reportedly hacked his brother to death on September 13, 2003 in a fit of rage in his village at Bonai over a family dispute. The trial court sentenced him in the following year.
