The State Congress chalked out a detailed plan for the panchayat elections next year at a PCC coordination committee meeting held here on Thursday.

Congress Odisha-in-charge BK Hariprasad, co-in-charge Subankar Sarkar, leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Narasingha Mishra and almost all senior leaders of the party attended the meeting chaired by PCC president Prasad Harichandan.

“A panchayat election committee, comprising campaign and candidate selection subcommittees, will be formed. Besides, observers at block levels, taskforces at both block and panchayat levels and supervisors in all districts will be posted,” Harichandan told reporters after the meeting.

He said a conference of party’s block presidents would be held during the current month to train them how to successfully fight panchayat polls. A senior leader would be posted as supervisor in each district, he said.

Harichandan further informed that party workers would stage dharnas at all PHCs and CHCs onSeptember 19 to protest against depleting healthcare system in the State.

Over the Mahanadi water sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, Harichandan said party would hold a Chetana Yatra in Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Cuttack and Kendrapada districts in the first week of October. Senior leaders would lead the yatra in their respective districts.

In response to a question on Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram project, he said the State Government can’t protect people’s interest as it has no data as to how much villages, agriculture land and people will be affected due to the under-construction project.
