Opposition Congress on Tuesday boycotted an all-party meeting convened by the Cuttack Mayor to break the CMC stalemate followed by the violent scenes at a CMC Council meeting last week when some ruling BJD corporators beat up Congress corporators using derogatory remarks against a Scheduled Caste member.
“The all-party meeting was cancelled as the Congress members did not attend it,” informed Deputy Mayor Ajay Barik of the BJD.
“The Congress corporators decided to boycott the meeting because the party has already lodged police complaints against the errant BJD corporators and given a seven-day ultimatum to the police to take appropriate action,” informed City Congress president Md Moquim.
At least four BJD corporators went berserk and physically assaulted Congress corporators when the latter were protesting against the failure of the civic body in controlling the dengue menace in the city during the monthly council meeting.
Congress corporator Arun Kumar Sethy (SC) has lodged the complaint at the Purighat police station naming four BJD corporators for beating him using derogatory remarks about his caste.
The city police have, however, not taken any action against the accused BJD members, for which the Congress leaders had gheraoed the district Collector’s office on Monday.
