A day after a rape victim committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Bhagabanpur under the Town police limits in Dhenkanal district, members of the Mahila Congress and kin of the deceased on Monday staged a road blockade at Bajichowk demanding immediate arrest of the accused and compensation to the victim’s family members.
The activists burnt tyres and staged demonstration pressing for their demands, for which vehicular movement was hit. The SDPO and police officials rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators.
On Sunday, Class-IX student Kamini Behera (17) ended her life after being raped by her neighbour Ranjan Sahu while she had gone out of her house to attend nature’s call in the wee hours.
When the accused was grilled by locals, he reportedly confessed to the crime and apologised to the girl’s family members. The families of the girl and the accused then signed a compromise note and submitted it at the Town police station.
But the girl told her sisters that she was humiliated over a compromise deal being struck with her tormentor. Fearing public shame and ignominy, she committed suicide.
