Hundreds of residents of Goilundi area of Ward No. 32 under Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC) led by local BJP leaders took out a protest march against the ongoing construction work of a community hall on the bank of a pond called Goilundi Sanabandh .
According to information available, the BMC authorities reportedly demolished a community toilet which existed on the bank of Goilundi Sanabandha and which was used for decades by the local residents.
The agitators went to the BMC office and submitted a memorandum to the BMC Commissioner here on Monday protesting the arbitrary demolition of the existing community toilet.
The BMC, on the one hand, is constructing toilets in different strategic places in the city and its outskirts under “Swachha Bharat” scheme to make the city defecation free, while on the other, it is demolishing the existing community toilets used by the public, the BJP leaders alleged.
Due to demolition of the toilet and construction of the community hall on the bank of the age old tank, the local residents are deprived of using the tank for their routine toilet and bathing, the memorandum said.
They demanded a probe into the matter and action against those responsible for the demolition of the toilet. Besides, they demanded construction of a new toilet in the place of the old one for community use at the earliest or else warned of resorting to agitation.
Among others, Ramesh Chandra Maharana and Sushila Mallik were present.
