Communities involved in conservation given Covid aid

Published on:

Due to limitations of supplies and lack of incomes, the Wild Orissa, a biodiversity conservation body, extended 15 days dry rations for 45 families of members of the Sri Sri Mahavir Pakshi Surakshya Samiti (SSMPSS) of Mangalajodi, as Covid lockdown assistance, recently.

It may be recollected that the SSMPSS was constituted by the Wild Orissa during 2000 for combating the menace of waterfowl poaching in Chilika lake (Mangalajodi village). It  has been 20 years now, this committee continues to serve its purpose and objectives, and continues to work closely in conservation of the wetlands of Chilika lake.

Further 'Wild Orissa' reached out to families of 25 tribal inhabitants from a village in Nayagarh district with dry rations for 15 days. The finance was raised from personal donations by the Wild Orissa members. The 25 persons are part of a bird protection committee which was formally constituted by the Wild Orissa last year, for promoting conservation of the breeding habitat of Asian Open Bill Storks. These Khond tribals have had been providing protection to these birds in their village for many decades now, in a selfless manner. This engagement with the village is part of our ongoing Eastern Ghats Wild Birds Conservation Programme in various parts of Khordha, Nayagarh and Ganjam districts for some time now.
