CM urged to disband police unions

The Odisha Suraksha Sena (OSS) on Sunday urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to disband all police unions in the State to check political excesses of police personnel.

OSS supremo Abhishek Joshi criticised the Police Association’s stand to retaliate the Government’s decision to suspend an ACP and an ASI of the Commissionerate police following the lapse in security arrangements for the Chief Minister on February 19.

“If the police failed to provide security to the Chief Minister, how can they protect common people,” asked Joshi, adding, “Instead of regretting its failure, the police association has planned to oppose the decision which is unfortunate.”

OSS members said allowing the police, which have all sorts of weapon at their disposal, to form union is a grave threat to democracy. To check the political excesses of the policemen, it is the first and foremost requirement to disband all their unions from the bottom to apex level, they added.
