Closure of Baleswar college gate protested

A controversy has erupted over the closing of a gate of the KKS Women’s College here with the local Councillor, ex-students of the college as well as local residents protesting the closure of the gate in the north-end.

The protesters told reporters that the gate had been in the north side since establishment of the college; yet it has been closed since about one year after construction of a gate in the south side of the college. They alleged that the gate was closed as the principal was pushing her own agenda.

The discontented group said that the hostels and other facilities are existing in the north-end, but after closure of the gate the students have to a take a long route to attend classes, besides the route not being safe.

College Principal Jayanti Pal said that since the old gate at the north side was narrow, there was lot of inconvenience for heavy and big vehicles to enter the college. There had been a demand for opening of a gate at the south-end by the students through their unions. Besides, the Staff Council had approved opening of a gate at the south-end which was made wider to meet the requirements.

Either side of the gate couldn’t be opened due to security reasons as there was only one security guard to check the entry point.
