Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were clamped in Rourkela on Tuesday after two groups clashed during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at the Old Station road on Monday night.

Twenty platoons of police force were deployed in the city to avoid any untoward incident, informed the Rourkela Sub-Collector.

Due to security reasons, the place for Namaaz prayer on the account of Eid-ul-Zuha was changed from the Idgah Ground to the Jama Masjid.

According to reports, there was an altercation between two groups at the Old Station road during the immersion procession of Ganesh idols of different pandals in the city on Monday night. The exchange of words led to violence as the two groups started pelting stones at each other. They also ransacked several shops and set a car on fire during the clash.

Being informed, police reached the spot and resorted to a mild lathicharge to take the situation under control. Normalcy returned after the SP and other senior police officials reached the spot and pacified the rival groups. Police have so far arrested six persons in connection with the group clash.
