City Raahgiri takes monsoon break

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided not to hold Raahgiri on Sundays in the city till October 2 in view of monsoon rains, informed BMC Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena at a Press conference here.

The Raahgiri day, which started from January 17 and was observed on 27 Sundays since then, has been suspended for the time being as rainfall acts as a major barrier in mass gathering, Jena said.

Rains have created hindrance in skating and painting on Raahgiri days besides creating problems for senior citizens to join the celebrations. After taking views of people from different quarters, it was decided to suspend the programme till October 2, the Mayor said.  Raahgiri would be re-observed from October 2, the Gandhi Jayanti day onwards, Jena added.

Notably, the Raahgiri days were in news for wrong reasons in the recent past as several youths were seen consuming alcohol on city roads during the observance. Besides, an official of a firm participating in the Raahgiri had thrashed a security person recently.
