City Mahila vending zone demolition decried

The Civil Society Alliance has strongly opposed the demolition of the city’s first Mahila vending zone near the Science Park here and demanded immediate compensation and rehabilitation aid of `50,000 towards each affected trader of the vending zone.

Notably, an Enforcement Squad of the BDA and the BMC demolished 64 unauthorised stalls in front of the Science Park and an unauthorised temporary hotel on the other side of the road here on Friday.

The members of the body alleged that while the State Government had installed the stalls and handed over their management to women in May in the name of women empowerment, this demolition drive without prior knowledge of the women traders has unmasked the State Government’s monopolistic attitude. Besides, it alleged that six women vendors were beaten up by male policemen during the drive and termed it as inhumanity.

“The body will took out to the streets if the State Government doesn’t provide the compensation and rehabilitation aid within seven days,” said Civil Society Alliance convenor Pradip Pradhan.
