The Commissionerate police have achieved a significant breakthrough by arresting the kingpin of an ATM looters’ gang, which had swindled Rs 48 lakh from different bank ATMs in the twin city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack using sophisticated technology.
Speaking at a Press meet here on Sunday, DGP KB Singh said the gang’s kingpin and a resident of Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, Ajay Choudhury was nabbed from neighbouring Jharkhand after intensive investigations by CP teams with the help of cyber experts. Rs 8 lakh was seized from Choudhury account and a laptop, hard disks and three mobile phones from
Interestingly, the gang did not make any forcible entry into the ATMs or break the machines or use any kind of violence. They used China made software to withdraw the money taking advantage of older version of the operating system (windows XP) used in the bank ATMS. They also did not use the mobile phones during the loots, so it was very difficult for the police to track them, said DGP Singh.
The bankers have been asked to upgrade the operating system and have 24x 7 control rooms to keep an eye on the ATMs to prevent such kind of loots, said the DGP and praised the CP for solving the ATM loots.
Police Commissioner YB Khurania said six members of the gang are still at large and the police teams are tracking them throughout the country to nab them.
