City buses in every four minutes soon

The public transport system in Bhubaneswar would soon get a makeover with addition of 200 more city buses. As a result, the daily commuters can avail bus service in every four minutes, informed Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Krishan Kumar on Monday.

After a meeting under the chairmanship Chief Secretary AP Padhi, Kumar said that BMC has decided to increase the number of City Buses to 310 from the existing 110 to streamline the transport service for daily commuters ahead of the forthcoming 2018 Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

The BMC Commissioner also informed that the civic body has decided to buy 200 buses including 50 AC ones.

Currently, 110 City Buses are plying in public-private partnership mode between Bhubaneswar-Puri Transport Service limited (BPTSl) and Dream Team Sahara (DTS) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) of the Central Government. People are getting the public transport service in every 15 to 20 minutes. However, with the addition of the new 200 buses, they would get the service in every four minutes, the Commissioner said.

Notably, the Hockey World Cup is scheduled to be held at the Kalinga Stadium here between November and December this year.
