Chit fund probe panel may submit report today

The Justice Madan Mohan Das-headed Commission of Inquiry on the chit fund scam is likely to submit its interim report to the State Government on Wednesday.

Sources said the Commission had already conducted inquiries into issues like the number of people who invested in chit fund firms, how many of them invested below and more than `10,000 and the Ponzi firms that cheated them and the legal aspects.

Besides, the panel is likely to make some suggestions to the Government including one to refund money to investors, who had deposited below `10,000, by selling the confiscated properties of the tainted Ponzi firms.

It may be noted that Opposition parties, Congress and BJP, have been demanding resignation of Justice Das for his controversial statement vis-à-vis interests of chit fund investors he made at a BJD lawyers’ wing meeting held in Cuttack last month. The State Assembly had been repeatedly stalled for nearly 12 days as the Opposition members kept demanding his resignation.
