Chit fund panel extends deadline for affidavits

Published on:

The Justice RK Patra Commission of Inquiry probing into unauthorised collection of public deposits (chit finds) has extended its deadline for receiving statements of affidavits.

The last date for this was earlier fixed on August 31. But the commission on Wednesday ordered that the affidavits be received till September 18.

The commission also clarified that anyone wishing to furnish statements of affidavits could do so in a plane paper affixing a court fee of Rs 3. Earlier, the affidavits were filed in non-judicial stamp papers costing around Rs 20. Ever since the commission came out with its notification inviting affidavits on August 4, it has till date received around 16,500 affidavits, sources said.

Following massive public outcry, the State Government last month had announced a judicial inquiry into the chit fund fraud and, accordingly, appointed former Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court

RK Patra to head the

one-man panel.

The panel has been asked to identify individuals and entities who indulged in

unauthorised collection

of public deposits and

to find out involvement of influential persons in

protecting and promoting such illegal activities.
