Rejecting the RDC probe ordered by the Chief Minister, the BJP on Saturday demanded a high-level judicial enquiry into the death of a person in police firing at Chandpur in Nayagarh district on Thursday and sought resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for failing to control the law and order situation in the State.
BJP leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, who had led a party delegation to Chandpur for an on-the-spot study, told reporters here that a judicial commission headed by a retired High Court judge should probe into the incident as the administrative enquiry ordered by the CM is an eyewash.
He also demanded Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased. In view of the “collapse” of law and order, Harichandan said the Home Department seems to be no longer not under the control Naveen Patnaik, who should resign on moral ground.
Dubbing the indiscriminate police firing on peaceful people as totally unlawful, he said it exposes the lack of rule of law in the State.
Condemning the apathy of the police in nabbing the culprits in the gruesome murder of four of a family at Chandpur and the subsequent firing, the BJP leader sought a clarification from the CM on the issue.
The State has been pushed to “jungle raj” under Patnaik, who is in the habit of always saying “law will take its course”, he remarked.
The BJP delegation to Chandpur included former Minister Surama Padhi, Chilika MlA Bibhuti Bhushan Harichandan, State vice-president Pruthwiraj Haichandan, former MlA Jyotirindra Nath Mitra, Khordha district president Sudipta Ray, State secretary Jatin Mohanty and Siba Prasad Bhanj.
