Turmoil’ seems to have assumed the middle name of the Ravenshaw University. Student unrest has been the routine here and the handful of faculties here is spending more time cajoling the agitated students than taking classes.
The election-related violence before the Puja vacation forced the authorities to clamp sine die. But even after lifting the prohibitory orders after the vacation, the situation is no better and the campus is witnessing dharnas and protests.
Seeking the Chancellor’s (Governor’s) intervention to bring back normalcy in the university campus, the Ravenshaw Vikash Abhijan, a body of former student leaders, met the Governor SC Jamir on Thursday and apprised him about the repeated disturbances in the campus.
After the lifting of the prohibitory orders of sine die on October 28, the campus soon plunged into disorder when some intruders hurled bombs at the office of the Vice-Chancellor on the night of Diwali. Basing on reports of the security guards holding two university students responsible for the incident, the university authorities suspended the erring students.
But pleading innocence, the two accused students questioned the action of the authorities saying there was no evidence against them. Soon, a handful of students, in support of the accused students, staged a dharna in the campus demanding recall of the suspension order. The authorities have, however, refused to reconsider the decision even as the dharna by the students continued for three days on Thursday.
Although the dharna has not hampered the classes, the tensed atmosphere has disturbed the academic ambience of the campus.
