C'garh using mere 3.5% water, says Raman Singh

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh has said his State is using only 3.5 per cent of the Mahanadi water while Odisha is using 14 per cent of it.

Singh said this in Raipur after chairing a meeting on Thursday.

“The remaining 82 per cent of the river water is left unutilised,” added Chhattisgarh Water Resources Minister Brij Mohan Agrawal after the meeting.

He charged that the Chhattisgarh Government has shared the information on projects on Mahanadi to Odisha.

“We have sent the information to Odisha and Central Water Commission. But we are yet to receive the same from Odisha Government,” said Agrawal.

On the other hand, Odisha Water Resources Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena said the State Government has not yet received information about all the projects already constructed, planned and under construction on the Mahanadi.

“We have received details of some projects. We are yet to receive information on all the projects from the Chhattisgarh Government.” said Jena.

Meanwhile, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday suggested that Odisha Chief Secretary visit Chhattisgarh for firsthand information on the construction of dams in the neighbouring State.

Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti had on August 24 called for a meeting with the Chief Ministers of Odisha and Chhattisgarh on a mutually convenient date between September 10 and 20 to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute.
