The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the family of an elderly woman, who was electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire in front of her home.
The commission has also asked the CESU authorities to submit a report as to what action they have taken regarding its order.
Brahmani Bewa (60) died and her daughter-in-law Anupama Maharana sustained serious injury as they came in contact with the live wire while going to market on April 11, 2012.
Anupama filed a petition with the OHRC seeking a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a Government job for her husband. The commission ordered a probe by the Chief Electrical Inspector, Odisha (CEIO).
The CEIO reported that due to the poor maintenance and negligence on the part of the CESU, Bewa died and Anupama was injured.
On the basis of the inquiry report, the OHRC directed the CESU to pay Rs 2.5 lakh to Anupama and her husband within two months from the day of the judgement.
