An unfortunate incident happened in the Capital Hospital on Saturday morning when a ceiling fan fell on an 82-year-old paralytic patient undergoing treatment in the hospital. The old man got hurt when the fan fell on his chest, said eyewitnesses.
At around 11.30 am, the fan suddenly fell on the patient when he was sleeping on her medical bed. The patient, Padma lochan Sahu, a native of Mangalajodi under Tangi police limits in Khurda district, was admitted at bed number 182 of male medicine ward on September 25 last after suffering from paralysis.
“As he was unable to speak, he could not explain what type of injury he sustained, but his facial expression showed that he received serious internal chest and stomach injuries,” said victim’s son Prafulla.
According to hospital director Dr Sudhir Chandra Mallick, the victim sustained no serious internal stomach and chest injuries. “We conducted an X-Ray after the incident to test whether he received any internal injury or not. We did not find any fracture or serious internal injuries and the patient’s condition is now stable,” said Dr Mallick.
He also revealed that the General Electrical Department (GED), division-I had repaired the fan on September 22, but it fell on Saturday.
When contacted, GED division-I junior engineer Padma Charan Panda admitted the mishap and held his subordinate electricians responsible. Meanwhile, the hospital director informed that an inquiry will be initiated into the issue.
Hospital patients alleged that the incident happened due to GED department’s negligence and carelessness. Earlier, electricity supply suddenly stopped when an operation was going on, added the patients.
