Even as observation of the Road Safety Month began on Monday, the Transport Department in a bid to minimise loss of human lives in road accidents and penalise the rules violators would soon instal intelligent camera (CCTV) systems on the entire stretch of the National Highway-16 from Rameswar in Khorda district to Panikohili in Jajpur district.
The CCTV cameras would be installed in every four to five kms of the NH, said Transport Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda. The new system would play a crucial role in putting a check on incidents of rash driving on the National Highway and intercepting vehicles with fake registration numbers. It is an ambitious project and 32 bidders have responded for the tender process.
The work for the installation of intelligent camera systems would be taken up soon, Panda said. Apart from this, the Transport Department has also allocated Rs 15 crore for the mega vehicle location tracking system. As per the plans, GPS systems would be installed in public transport vehicles including buses, taxis and school buses.
The system would be helpful in tracking the vehicles on a real time basis and their speed can also be analysed, Panda said.
