The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to five State Governments, including Odisha, while adjudicating a PIl seeking a CBI probe into the multi-crore chit fund scams that have been rocking the whole country. Hearing the PIl filed by one Alok Jena from Odisha, the apex court asked the States to submit their replies within four weeks.
“We primarily made two prayers before the court. We sought an investigation into the fraud including involvement of politicians by the CBI. The court was inclined towards our petition and the CBI counsel also expressed willingness to investigate the case stating that the scams have had huge ramifications,” the petitioner’s counsel Suresh Tripathy said.
During the hearing, the lawyer representing the Idisha Government appraised the court of the steps taken by the Government in the aftermath of the scam.
The State Government announced measures including setting up of a Rs 300-core corpus fund to help out the duped depositors. An inquiry commission has also been formed headed by retired Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court RK Patra to probe the scam.
