CBI court rejects former Microfinance MD bail plea

The Special CBI Court here on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of former Microfinance ltd managing director Durga Prasad Mishra and sent him to judicial custody till January 8. The CBI produced Mishra before the court after finishing his medical check-up at the Capital Hospital.

During argument before the court, Mishra’s counsel Tapas Acharya requested it for grant of bail to his client citing health grounds. He said Mishra has had a bypass surgery in July this year and requires routine health check-up.

CBI senior counsel Kali Charan Mishra, however, opposed Acharya’s argument stating that the agency has been conducting regular health check-ups on the accused. He also argued that since the CBI is still in the process of probing the larger conspiracy in the case, the former Microfinance MD should not be denied bail at this stage.

The Odisha High court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to newspaper owner Madhu Mohanty, who is now in CBI custody since September 15 for his alleged link with multi-crore chit fund scam.

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, who had reserved the verdict on Mohanty’s bail application on November 26 after completion of hearing, pronounced the judgment on the ground that the CBI has kept the investigation in the case open although preliminary chargesheet against him was filed on December 11.

Mohanty had approached the High Court last month after his bail applications were rejected by the CBI court and the Khordha District and Sessions Court separately.
