The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Income Tax Officer Suman Kumar Sahoo, who had been caught red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a jeweller in Khordha on Saturday.
He was brought to the CBI office in Bhubaneswar for interrogation. Late, he was produced in court.
Sahoo had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from the jeweller to settle some tax matters relating to the latter. The jeweller approached the CBI and lodged a complaint.
Sahoo had also allegedly threatened the complainant that if the bribe was not paid to him, he would conduct a raid on his shop. After negotiations, he agreed to accept the money in two installments.
The CBI laid a trap and caught Sahoo while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh as the first installment from the complainant.
Searches were conducted at the premises of Sahoo which led to the recovery of certain property documents.
