CB to probe Astarang quadruple murder

Bowing down to the pressure of villagers who did not allow the police to take possession of the bodies of four members of a family who were murdered on Tuesday night at Dinadiapada village in Astarang in Puri district demanding a Crime Branch (CB) inquiry, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday entrusted the CB to conduct probe into the gruesome incident.

Retired District Inspector (DI) of Schools Dinabandhu Mallick (65) along with his wife Kumudini (50) and two minor daughters aged four and eight years were found brutally hacked to death at their home at Dinadiapada village on Tuesday night.

Villagers, who detained the bodies, allowed police vehicle to take the bodies for postmortem after the Crime Branch probe was ordered.

After retirement, Mallick had opened a paan shop in his village. As the paan shop remained closed for the whole day, a villager went to Dinbandhu's house to find out the reason and found all the four members of the house murdered.

He found the body of the elder daughter on the top floor of their house while the bodies of the three other members were found in another room.

When police reached the place, villagers did not allow them to take possession of the bodies and send them for post-mortem demanding a Crime Branch inquiry into the case.

Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma said a team has been formed for investigation and it would start inquiry on Wednesday.

Notably, Puri SP Rajesh Singh had formed a four-member team of police to investigate the case. Central range IG RP Kochhe also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Relatives of the deceased said miscreants might

have committed the crime for properties.
