Cattle breed pact not to help farmers'

The Odisha Milk Farmers’ Association (OMFA) on Wednesday said the State Government-JK Trust pact for setting up of 510 integrated livestock development (IlD) centres would further damage the dairy farmers’ economic condition as the Government has already failed to check distress sale of milk.

“As a time when the State Government has failed to provide fodder at subisidised rate and check distress sale of milk, the plan to provide more cross-bred cattle is nothing but a farce. Our association is strongly opposing the pact with the JK Trust,” said OMFA president Rabi Behera in a statement.

Behera, also the Samajawadi Party state president, demanded that Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Pradeep Maharathy should fix minimum support price of Rs 30 per litre of milk for farmers and order a probe into the irregularities of the Omfed. He said farmers would intensify stir if all milk are not procured by the Omfed at right prices.
