Unidentified miscreants looted cash and gold worth lakhs of rupees from the house of a kerosene dealer at Lahangapada village under the Lahunipada police station in the district on Tuesday night.
Reports said the miscreants broke into the house of Hemant Mahanta at late night when all members of the family were in deep slumber. They decamped with cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees kept in 10 almirahs in the house. Before fleeing the looters locked the house from outside.
When the family members woke up this morning, they learnt about the loot and found the door locked from outside. Mahanta later called up a neighbour asking him to open the door. Later, he lodged a complaint with the Lahunipada police, who have initiated a probe into the incident.
