A Canadian national who is originally from a Hindu family of Bangladesh on Friday lodged a complaint with the Puri police alleging that he was assaulted by a servitor inside the Jagannath Temple.

Barendra Sanyal, who along with his wife came to have a darshan of lord Jagannath, said on Friday afternoon while he was standing before the sanctum sanatorium, a servitor lit a diya near him. However, when Sanyal protested that his dress might catch fire, the servitor flew into a rage and assaulted him.

Sanyal also met Puri Additional District Magistrate Uddahab Majhi. “I got Sanyal’s complaint and follow-up action will be taken in consultation with the police and the temple administration,” Majhi said.
