As part of their efforts of making Bhubaneswar a Smart City, the city police have installed a speed camera along with an automated speed detecting sign at NH-16 opposite the Hotel Siddhartha, Nayapalli, here to reduce fatal accidents.

The two powerful devices installed a month ago have so far detected 600 speed violators on the site.

The revolutionary camera comprises 2D multi-beam infrared speed enforcement camera and a long-range Wi-Fi repeater and in-vehicle Wi-Fi router for connection to police tablet, laptop, and printer. The camera measures cars speed and records the date, time and location apart from capturing image of number plate, direction of travel and speed limit in the area. Similarly, the automated speed detecting sign detects the speed of the vehicle and helps them to slow down whilst they are over speeding.

The devices have caught 600 speed violators, who drove above 75 kmph against speed limit of 70 kmph on the NH at Nayapally.

According to the report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, speeding accounted for 2,40,463 accidents in 2015, which killed 64,633 people and injured 2,53,852 people. World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised ‘Speeding’ as one of the five risk-factors in road accidents. In Delhi alone in 2015, 640 people were killed in over 3,000 accidents caused due to speeding. Reckless driver could be imprisoned for up to six months or fined up to Rs 1,000 or both.
