Five students of the Art and Crafts College of Baleswar earned accolades for their institution by   participating in a prestigious exhibition- cum -poster   competition on themes of child rights in an international platform.

The posters made by these students were exhibited during the annual conference of CTAUN (Committee on Teaching about the United Nations) held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on April 6.

College Principal Nikunja Bihari Das said, “The notification for the exhibition cum competition came to our knowledge in early this year. As many as 21 students from our college had sent their posters made on different themes on child rights. They were presented by one of our representatives, Basanti Dey Chakraborty in New York and five of them were selected to be displayed in the conference.”

“We are happy that those posters could find a place in such prestigious venue,” he said.

The posters which were shortlisted and exhibited belong to Meghashree Das, Sagar Kumar Jena, lakeshmita Das, Sonali Swatirekha and Sarifun Quadri of the college.

“Despite availability of resources and opportunities, the children of our society used to work in their tender age to help their parents in earning bread and butter for the family,” said Sonali one of the artists.

“The law and rules hardly can bring in change but it is the    awareness which can help to a great extent in the mission in eradicating child labour,” she said depicting the themes chosen for the posters.

The posters were drawn by the students basing on their rights mainly on education, child labour and legitimate rights, she stated.

CTAUN provides educators worldwide with opportunities to learn about the work of the United Nations and to incorporate this global awareness into curricula and school activities at all levels.

The 19th CTAUN Conference in New York aimed to protect the world’s children which were attended by more than 560 educators, students and others.
