B'swar health staff's blunder puts infants' life at risk

Slackness on the part of a health worker at an anganwadi centre at Kochiakoili village under Bahanaga block in Baleswar district put the life of two babies at stake as they were administered wrong vaccinations on Wednesday.

Sources said vaccines meant for the two infants got interchanged. While a three-month-old boy was given measles vaccines instead of vaccination for DPT, a nine-month-old boy was given the vaccination for DPT instead measles. Following this, both the babies fell sick.

later, the three-month-old infant was admitted to the Gopalpur CHC after high fever and loss of appetite due to the wrong vaccination.

During inquiry by the block Child Development Programme Officer (CDPO) as well as the Health Department, it was found that such blunder by the official occurred due to the common name of the mothers of both the babies. The names were Rasmita Upadhay and Rasmita Mahalik.

Sources said conditions of both the babies were stable after treatment. However, an explanation before action has been sought from the health worker Gopabandhu Parmanik, said Gopalpur CHC medical officer Minaketan Mohanty.
