Police detain office cashier
The Sahadevkhunta police have detained the cashier of Sadar block office suspecting his involvement in a case after a cheque was detected in a bank while an amount of Rs 37.50 lakh was sought to be fraudulently withdrawn.
The account, on which the cheque was presented, belonged to the block and was opened for IAY transactions.
The cheque, which had been sent for collection to the SBI main branch from the Baleswar Bhadrak Central Cooperative Bank (BBCCB), was deposited in the account of one Saroj Bhuyan on Thursday.
The Chief Manager suspecting such a huge amount of transaction through only one cheque leaf sought to know about the cheque from Assistant Block Development Officer (ABDO) Bhagabat Jena. Jena in turn asked Cashier Birakishor Prusty if he had issued any such cheque.
learning that no such cheque was issued, Jena requested the manager to hold the cheque. During a subsequent inquiry Jena found that 70 cheque leaves were missing from the block’s 18 different accounts.
Jena lodged an FIR with the Sahadevkhunta police.
While Prusty told police that he took the charge of accounts in July by minutely going through all details, the police have found that the account opened in the name of Saroj Bhuyan is a fake one. The identity and address proofs submitted during opening of the account about a year ago were forged ones and transactions over Rs 2 lakh have already been made through the account.
From the CCTV footage, the police have also found that the individual who had submitted his photographs in the bank during opening of the account is the same person who presented the cheque.
“We have learnt that the account opened in BBCCB is a fake one. We have also identified the concerned person. The investigation is on and culprits would be nabbed soon,” said investigating police officer Bhabagrahi Barik. The previous cashier of the block has also come under police scanner.
