Sleuths of the Central Excise Department arrested an engineering student from Patia Big Bazaar Square here on the charge of smuggling brown sugar.
Acting on a tipoff, the sleuths nabbed the accused and seized 60 grams of brown sugar and a motorcycle from his possession.
The arrestee, identified as Biswajit Swain, hails from Orilo in Jagatsinghpur district. He was earlier pursuing B Tech in Mechanical branch from a city-based college, the officials said.
The accused was working as a peddler and used to deliver the contraband at the doorsteps of buyers, the officials said.
“Biswajit was selling the narcotics to the students of different institutions and other customers of the locality by using the code name ‘Garlic’,” an official said.
The accused was using the code word to avoid police tracking as continuous raids are being carried out in the city after series seizures of the contraband and arrest of peddlers, the official added.
