The Commissionerate police on Friday arrested a woman from the Haladipadia slum under the Laxmisagar police station here on the charge of peddling brown sugar.
The Quick Action Team (QAT) and the Laxmisagar police conducted a joint raid in the slum and seized 19 grams of brown sugar from the possession of the woman peddler.
Of late, the Haladipadia slum has turned a safe haven for peddlers, who circulate the contraband in the city right under the nose of the Excise Department and the police.
Earlier on April 24, the Excise Department sleuths had seized 45 gram brown sugar worth Rs 4.5 lakh from the slum.
The Flying Squad had also seized 200 grams of brown sugar worth around Rs 20 lakh from the slum.
Police had rounded up several peddlers from the slum area on charges of smuggling brown sugar but is alleged that the kingpins have eluded the police dragnet.
