In a suicide pact, two members of a family died at Masterpada village in the Sohela area of Bargarh district on Sunday. Another member of the family was battling for life in hospital.
Bansidhar Sahu and his sister Subarna Mahajan died after they allegedly consumed poison. Their mother Kumudini , who also consumed poison, is now battling for her life at the Sohela Community Health Centre (CHC).
As per sources, Kumudini and her children had been under severe mental stress since September 6 when her ailing husband died. It is believed that they were unable to come to terms with the loss and attempted to end their lives. At around 11 am on the day, they locked themselves in a room and consumed insecticide.
After coming to know about this, neighbours informed police. Upon reaching the spot, cops broke open the door and rescued them in serious condition. They rushed the trio to the Sohela CHC.
Later, Bansidhar was shifted to the VIMSAR in Burla. However, he succumbed while undergoing treatment. Similarly, Subarna succumbed while being shifted from the Sohela hospital to the VIMSAR.
