On Sunday, a bridegroom was assaulted by the bride's relatives and their villagers after the former and his friends in the marriage party created vandalism in an inebriated mood at the bride's village and misbehaved with the bride's family.

Curiously, the bride discarded the groom as he came to her house in an inebriated state on the wedding day. The bridegroom and his family members were detained as the bride's family demanded return of all dowry ornaments, which were earlier given by them. Besides, they demanded that the groom's family must bear all the expenses, said Baulakani sarapanch Haladhar Swain.

According sources, Pradip Mallick (26), son of late Antarjyami Mallik, a resident of Sahabajpur village under Bijaynagar panchayat in Mahakalapada block, was to marry Runi (name changed), daughter of Surendra Mallick of Badatota Chhapali village under Baulakani panchayat on Sunday night. While his marriage procession was going on in the bride's village, some of his friends, who were in an inebriated mood, offered Pradip to consume liquor. After taking liquor, Pradip and his friends started dancing in the Barat and later misbehaved with the bride's relatives, besides creating vandalism. This was enough to ruffle the feathers of the villagers who drove the marriage party out of the village. later, the bride's relatives, along with the villagers, detained the bridegroom in a house after the girl denied to marry the alcoholic groom.

On Monday, both sides tried to make peace but in vain. Both sides agreed to the termination of the marriage as the girl did not budge, while the bridegroom side agreed to return all jewelleries and gifts given to them earlier. The groom and his family members had not been let off when the report was being filed.
