The golden jubilee celebration of the Berhampur University kick-started at the Bhanja Vihar here on Saturday. The function would continue for three days.

Higher Education Minister Pradeep Kumar Panigrahi attended the event as chief guest while MP Siddhant Mohapatra, National law University, Delhi founder Prof Ranbir Singh and Brahmapur MlA Ramesh Chandra Chaupatnaik joined as guests of honour. University Vice-Chancellor Prof Deepak Kumar Behera and Registrar Remish Kerketta were present.

Padma Shree Giriraj Kishore was conferred with the Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja National Award on this occasion. Kishore, who is among the few Indian litterateurs of the 20th Century, has, in his writings, depicted Bhanja’s humanistic orientation.  Besides, Arjuna Adhikari was also felicitated with loka Sanskruti Samman for his folk art and drama. Kantaru Behera was also awarded.

However, many students resented that the function is not up to the mark. “Many intellectuals, political leaders and advocates didn’t attend. While such a function is usually graced by at least any one of noted persons like President, Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Union Ministers, the varsity authorities only invited some familiar faces as guests,” lamented a student.

Besides, 35 meritorious students of the university were awarded with cash rewards in lieu of gold medals. The university authorities did not feel necessary to invite its alumni, who have contributed a lot to the university, he added.
