Boy hit by teacher with duster, in hospital

Instances of corporal punishment are galore in Kendrapada district. In the latest incident, an injured Class VIII student had to be admitted at the District Headquarters Hospital after a teacher of Gulanagar High School beat him mercilessly on Monday.

The victim was identified as Gulfam Khan, a student of Gulnagar High School. He sustained injuries on head when teacher Alekha Chandra Mohanty hit his head with a duster for a minor mistake.  Not only was he beaten but was asked to kneel down outside the class. His mistake was that he had dropped a berry in the class room.

When contacted, headmaster of the school Bijay Kumar Samal said Mohanty beat the student over a silly matter .The student’s head was swelling. I would inform to the higher-ups, he stated.

On the contrary, Mohanty informed that the allegation against him was purely fabricated. Targeting the headmaster, he said the headmaster had hatched a conspiracy by being hand in glove with student Khan as he often protested the headmaster’s coming to school late and looting the mid day meal (MDM) stuff from the school.

DPC of SSA–cum-in charge DEO Gadadhar Behera said he had directed BEO of Kendrapara Prasant Kumar Mohanty to conduct an inquiry on the alleged matter and submit a detailed report. If the teacher would be found guilty then necessary action would be initiated against him, he assured.
