International boxer Mamata Kumari Panda allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into a well on Thursday evening, hours after her husband committed suicide in Brahmapur.
The 31-year-old ace boxer, employed as a Sub-Inspector at the Adaba police station in Gajapati district, was rescued by fire tenders and rushed to the MKCG Medical College Hospital. Her condition was stated to be critical.
Though the reason behind Mamata’s suicide bid was not yet known, family dispute is suspected to be the caused for the attempt to take the extreme step.
As per reports, a heartbroken Mamata tried to end her life by jumping in well at around 8 pm after coming to know about the death of her husband Nilamani Das, who had committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon by consuming some poisonous substance.
Nilamani Das had been admitted to the MKCG Hospital, where he died.
On Friday, the Paralakhemundi SDPO visited the hospital and inquired about the condition of Mamata.
