At least three persons were injured when a group of Students Congress leaders allegedly hurled a bomb near the Congress Bhawan here on Wednesday. They were admitted at the Capital Hospital. Tension prevailed at the Congress Bhawan as two student groups began fighting with each other during the election of the Students' Congress conducted by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI).
The bomb was hurled targeting Congress Bhawan. However, it missed the target and fell on the road resulting in injury to three persons, sources said. According to sources, the polling was going smoothly in the morning. At around 2 pm the situation turned ugly when the bomb was hurled at the Congress Bhawan premises. One group of students also destroyed a ballot box and threw the ballot papers in nearby drains.
Sources said representatives of Students' Congress from 13 districts had come to the Congress Bhawan to participate in the election. However, the scenario became controversial over a dispute between two student groups.
PCC president Prasad Harichandan and many senior leaders of the party rushed to the Congress Bhawan. Senior Congress leader Suresh Routray blamed the irate mobs and clarified that this was done by some antisocials. "No Congress workers were involved in this act. Some antisocials have done this," said Routray. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at the Congress State party headquarters.
