The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started collecting biomedical wastes from the doorsteps of houses within BMC area where Covid-19 positive patients are under home isolation by engaging the Jagruti Welfare Organisation.

Jagruti has deploying dedicated vehicles in compliance to standards laid down by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for transportation of the biomedical wastes to the waste disposal centre of Sani Clean Pvt Ltd at Tangiapada near Khordha.

The wastes are collected through double-layered non-chlorinated disposable plastic bags. Jagruti would cover around 100 houses per vehicle. It would now engage four vehicles which would be up-scaled in case of any increase in the home isolation cases. The BMC would provide the list of home isolation patients with their details of address and contact information to Jagruti on a daily basis and appoint a nodal officer for supervision of the work done.

According to the CPCB, biomedical wastes shall comprise used syringes, date-expired or discarded medicines, used masks/gloves; and in case of patients with other chronic diseases, may also include drainage bags, urine bags, body fluid or blood-soaked tissues/cotton and empty ampules.
