The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned a sustainable mechanism for segregation of wastes at source points before taking them to dumping sites.
The BMC plan would be executed by all stakeholders from July 1 before which a consultation workshop would be organised among all the sanitation agencies, Sanitary Inspectors, BMC officials and community members.
Besides, the civic body has chalked out a rigorous communication plan for creating awareness on waste segregation among denizens through mass media and community level meetings.
It has also decided to take enforcement gate way to check the violation of waste segregation. Action would be taken against individuals who wouldn’t implement waste segregation method before door to door collection.
In the first phase of implementation, the BMC’s SBA Cell would approach members of the Resident Welfare Association as they are one of the organised colonies.
The BMC would also review the status of action taken on its previous notice issued to various apartments, restaurants, hotels and hostels, which are considered as bulk waste generators. These sectors should go for onsite composting and follow the waste segregation norms. A list of empanelled agencies, who are working in the field of onsite composting, would be provided to them.
For community level awareness, NGOs and BMC officials would hold meetings. It is also decided to take help of celebrities to approach the community for segregation of waste at source.
The carts being used for door to door collection would be re-designed to collect household garbage.
