Scarcity of blood in the Red Cross Blood Centre at the MKCG Medical College Hospital (MKCGMCH) here reportedly took life of a woman patient on Wednesday, triggering tension in the hospital premises.
According to information, one Jayanti (25), wife of Sanyasi Barik of Sahaspur under Aska block in Ganjam district, was pregnant. She was admitted in the Aska Community Health Centre (CHC) on Tuesday night. Jayanti gave birth to a female child.
Both the mother and the newborn were reportedly in good health for first four hours. But at 10 am on Wednesday, Jayant’s condition juddenly deteriorated and, thus, was referred to the MKCGMCH.
Attending the patient, doctors at the MKCGMCH advised the relatives to bring blood for Jayanti. Jayanti’s attendants soon rushed to the Red Cross Blood Centre to bring blood but failed in their attempt.
According to Rama Chandra Swain, one of the Jayanti’s relatives, doctors asked them for ‘O’ positive group blood. Unfortunately, not a single blood sachet of that group was found in the blood centre at that time.
When returned empty-handed, the relatives were asked to bring ‘O’ positive blood immediately to save Jayanti’s life. Swain donated blood at 1 pm. Then blood centre authorities gave them ‘O’ positive blood sachet. By the time the relatives reached Jayanti at her bed, she had died.
Reports said the Red Cross Center needs 100 units of blood daily against which only 10 units of blood are available.
However, MKCGMCH superintendent Prof Ashoak Kumar Behera clarified that the patient was admitted in critical condition with PPH. She was in the urgent need of blood. If the required blood had been collected at the right time, her life could have been saved.
BJP District president BK Swain, general secretaries Gopinath Panda and Sunil Kumar Sahu, BJP District Yuva Morcha president Prabhat Kiran Sadangi and mahanagar unit president Bhavani Shankar Das, expressing grief over the patient’s death, have cautioned the Government to ensure the availability of blood of all groups at the MKCGMCH at all point of time.
