BJP wants culprits to be chargesheeted in 30 days

Even as minor girl gang-rape accused former Biramitrapur IIC Ananda Chandra Majhi was dismissed, arrested and taken on a four-day remand by the Crime Branch police, the BJP and the Congress on Friday demanded arrest of all the accused and exemplary action taken against them.

BJP State general secretary Lekhasri Samantsinghar alleged that Majhi along with another police official and four friends raped the girl for three months.

“Even as CCTV cameras have been installed at the police station, it is worrisome that the SP is yet to take any action against the other accused persons.” said Samantsinghar after returning from an on-the-spot visit.

Terming DGP Abhay’s apology to the victim as a welcome geture, Samantsinghar said, “This is not the DGP’s primary task. Failing to protect women and check crimes, such an apology only indicates his helplessness,” she said.

She demanded that all culprits be brought to book and charge-sheeted under the POCSO, SC and ST Atrocities Act and illegal abortion law and punished stringently within 30 days. She too demanded Rs 8.25 lakh compensation be paid to the victim under SC and ST Atrocity Act and a comprehensive plan for her to lead normal life in the society.

Former Biramitrapur MLA, Congress leader George Tirkey slammed the State Government and the police administration for the inordinate delay in action against the other culprits.

“If the other accused, including the doctor and another police person, are not arrested by July 5, our party will intensify the agitation from July 6,” he told a Press meet at Rourkela.

He demanded to bring DCPO and CWC, Sundargarh under the purview of CB inquiry and adequate compensation to and safety and rehabilitation of the victim.

On Friday, the Sundargarh Additional District Magistrate Court allowed the Crime Branch to take Majhi on a four-day remand after rejecting his bail plea.
