The BJP would observe a dawn-to-dusk bandh in Cuttack on Monday to protest the State Government’s decision not to grant relaxations during the upcoming festive season.

Party leader Samir Dey on Sunday said the BJP would observe the bandh from 6 am to 6 pm in Cuttack. The shutdown has been called to protect all the stakeholders and people’s interest.

“All the business and other commercial establishments in the city will remain closed tomorrow during the bandh. We appeal the Cuttack residents to support the bandh which has been called against the State Government turning a deaf ear to the demands of the puja committees.”However, all the essential services would be exempted during the bandh, he added.

Dey also targeted Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab and questioned whether the MP was unaware of the controversy over the idol height and asked why a meeting with the Chief Minister was not scheduled earlier.

On Saturday, the Cuttack Shanti Committee decided to approach Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as a last resort in seeking relaxations.

This was decided in an emergency meeting to plan a strategy after the State Government announced no relaxations and decided to continue with the 4-ft cap on idol height. The committee decided that it would appeal to the Chief Minister by September 16 to reconsider the decision on height of Durga Puja idols.
