The BJP on Sunday demanded that the Government and the State Election Commission (SEC) conduct local body elections without any delay, failing which the party would move an impeachment motion against the SEC.
BJP State president Samir Mohanty told reporters that since last three years there are no people’s representatives in the urban local bodies and everything is now controlled by bureaucrats, for which urban citizens are deprived of the various entitlements and schemes meant for them.
Mohanty alleged that the funds sent by the Centre for Centrally-sponsored schemes are being misappropriated by the bureaucrats.
“The State Government failed to conduct the civic body elections while the SEC has initiated a process to start panchayat polls, but to the utter dismay of many, the SEC has not mentioned about conducting urban local body elections,” he said.
Party spokesperson Pitambar Acharya said that unless the State Government moves the High Court to conduct panchayat elections before the urban local body polls, the BJP would be forced to move an impeachment motion against the commission in Parliament.
It’s quit unfortunate that the SEC has forgotten its Constitutional duty and is carrying the wishes of the State Government even though the terms of the municipal bodies have already expired three years ago, said Acharya.
