BJP demands shelter to evicted B'pur slum dwellers

BJP youth wing members led by district Yuva Morcha president Prabhat Kiran Sadangi on Saturday went out in an impressive procession to the BMC office here and submitted a memorandum to the BMC Commissioner Dr Ajit Mishra demanding payment of adequate compensation and making provision of Rajiv Awas for the slum dwellers before evicting them from lanjipalli on the outskirts of the city.

Thousands of SC and other poor workers and rickshaw-pullers are staying in their temporary shelters at lanjipalli after the cyclone Phailin without any Government assistance. Now, they are the victims of an eviction drive by the local administration in the name of the widening the road without providing them alternative shelter, said Yuva Morcha leader Sadangi.

Describing the eviction as inhuman, Sadangi demanded that the Government rehabilitate the slum dwellers permanently in some alternative places under the Rajiv Awas Yojana and ensure that their children are not deprived of school education.

If the administration fails to provide necessary shelter to the evicted families, the Yuva Morcha would intensify its agitation to provide justice to the victims, he warned.

Hundreds of slum dwellers with their children on their shoulders joined the procession. Among others, BJP District General Secretary Sanjay Choudhury led the rally.
