The BJP Krushak Morcha on Monday urged Governor Dr SC Jamir to direct the State Government to check illegal transportation of cows, bullocks and buffalos and promote rearing of domestic animals.
“Numbers of cows, bullocks and buffalos are decreasing in the State due to callous attitude of the State Government and illegal transportation. Resultantly, small farmers and landless depending on animal rearing are suffering a lot. Kindly ask the State Government to take requisite steps in this regard,” Morcha leaders urged the Governor.
A team led by led by Morcha president Maheswar Sahoo met Jamir at the Raj Bhavan here and submitted a memorandum in this regard.
They apprised the Governor that while numbers of cows and bullocks have dwindled by 5.59 per cent, buffalos’ number has fallen by 39 per cent during 2007-2012 as per the 19th livestock Census. While there were 1.35 crore cows, bullocks and buffalos in 2007, the number reduced to 1.2 crore by 2012.
Similarly, illegal transportation of cattle from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal has been rampant in these years. The State Government has not taken any step to check this illegal trade and even to protect gochar (grazing land), they alleged.
They too pointed out that if the State Government doesn’t check illegal transportation of cattle, its proposal for promotion of bio-fertilider will be failing.
Among others, Morcha’s national executive member Krushna Jagadeb, State vice-president Surath Biswal, secretary Hrushikesh Jena, Rabinarayan Mohapara and Ranjan Mangaraj were present.
